James C. Hormel Shoot

I had the opportunity to photograph James C. Hormel, the first openly gay U.S. ambassador who was appointed by President Clinton. The University of Chicago commissioned me to photograph him for their alumni magazine.  His recently published book, Fit to Serve, chronicles the challenges of being confirmed. He told a story of having John Ashcroft as a student at the University of Chicago, Ashcroft was one only two opposing his confirmation. The other was none other than Jesse Helms. Mr Hormel was a pleasure to work with and photograph. These are the kinds of jobs I love most.
